In 2015 Smith co-founded The Grateful American™ Book Prize with Dr. Bruce Cole, a former chairman of the National Endowment of the Humanities; it is the only award for excellence in non-fiction and historical fiction–about any event that has influenced the formation of America–written for 7th to 9th graders.
This fall he will inaugurate The Grateful American Book Series ; it focuses on historical couples that were–in actuality–partnerships. The first work, to be published in September, is about “Abigail & John” (Adams).
